Sonos Soundbar Arc Versus Playbar Features:

So here are some of the features that are incorporated in the Arc.

Sonos Arc: HDMI eARC with HDMI CEC and auto sync, Alexa and Google Assistant on-board.

Sonos Playbar: IR Receiver.

It does not take much imagination to see that things have moved on a bit since the Playbar was launched. Even though they are both Sonos speakers, there is a difference. As the Playbar is connected to a TV (or AV receiver) via optical, it therefore receives audio and nothing more.

On the other hand, the Sonos Arc Soundbar is a much more advanced piece of kit. And with a HDMI connection, will receive HDMI eARC support.

With HDMI eARC you also receive a number of additional benefits. So not only will it support the bandwidth required to give you a Dolby Atmos soundtrack. There is also a two-way connection making it possible for the Sonos Arc to communicate with the TV as well.

There is also another new exciting feature that is incorporated in the Sonos Soundbar Arc. And that is, voice control and assistance.

And just like the Sonos One and Move, the Arc also has Alexa and Google Assistant support on board. What this means to you is, that you can use the four far-field microphone array. Allowing you to issue commands and also ask questions of either voice assistant.

The Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa are already built into the Sonos Arc. Thus allowing you to play music and check the news and set your alarms. As well as get your questions answered and a lot more. And all this is completely hands-free.

Sound Difference between Sonos Arc & Playbar.

Sonos Arc: Is fitted with 8 woofers, 3 tweeters – and Dolby Atmos
Sonos Playbar: Has 6 mid-range woofers and 3 tweeters.

Both the Sonos Arc and Playbar have been fitted with Class-D digital amplifiers to match their speaker drivers.
There is also quite a notable difference in the sound between the two bars. This is due to the fact that the Arc is the first Sonos speaker to incorporate the Dolby Atmos support.

The Playbar:

The Playbar is essentially a 3.0 system which can be matched to a couple of separate Sonos One speakers. If you would like a more home cinema setup, the Sonos Sub would be ideal for this.

The Playbar is still an excellent sound system, with a good range of speakers. These include six mid-range drivers, along with three tweeters and nine Class D amplifiers. Two of the Playbar speakers are placed at an angle at each end. This will give you a wider sound angle when coupled with
the front-left and right facing drivers. The center channel is equipped with two woofers and one tweeter. Therefore providing you with clear and precise vocals.

The Sonos Arc Soundbar:

The arc is a somewhat different animal that has been completely revised. And also re tuned, which will now give you a more 5.0.2 experience from the same soundbar. The far left and right drivers have been angled even more which will give you a wider side channel experience. Leaving the front facing drivers to work for center and left and right channels.

This soundbar has also been equipped with eight elliptical woofers along with three tweeters. And each one of them is served by one of the 11 Class D amplifiers. You also have the opportunity to add a couple of Sonos One speakers (or even an older Play:1) for extra surround sound and even a
Sub if you so wish.

The Sonos Arc has also been given two extra drivers, which have been angled upwards. What this does is creates the height channels which are needed for the Dolby Atmos.
These in turn will bounce the supported soundtracks off the ceiling to the person listening. This will provide you with a further immersion experience into a movie a sporting event or the Atmos-mixed music.

Sonos Arc Soundbar Design:

The Sonos Arc has been given a major design overall when you compare it to the Playbar. Having said that, it has the same smooth curves and elliptical ends similar to the Sonos Speaker range. And both work equally as well as each other when on a TV stand or mounted on the wall. The in-built intelligent sensors will determine the exact position for each bar, with regard to adjusting the sound signature that will suit.

If you check out the connections on the back, you will see that they are different. The Arc is fitted with a HDMI port that is HDMI
eARC capable. In contrast to this, the Playbar has been fitted with a single optical digital audio input (TOSlink).

If you decide to buy the new Sonos soundbar but have an older type TV, an optical audio adapter is included with the Arc. Having said that, you will find that most modern TVs these days will support HDMI ARC or eARC from at least one of their ports.

The elliptical woofers that have been fitted in the Sonos Soundbar Arc are quite similar to the ones that are fitted in the Sonos Beam. The difference being that they are powered by a larger motor. This in turn will move a greater distance and push out more air, therefore improving the sound.
